Pioneer - Illustration Friday 1/1/10

Lores-cotts

My first post for 2010 is my last Illustration Friday of 2009 and the theme is Pioneer. I need sleep - it's 5am, cold and snowing a little, (clearly not much of a pioneer spirit going on here!) so these are just a few Pioneer houses from my sketchbook, made yesterday. Mixed media. Happy New Year everyone!
Update: I've put a bunch of these up on flickr - here's a collage of all 26 sketches and you'll find closeups in the set. Thanks for looking.

IF - Celebration with Retro Cake

Celebration-retro-cake

This week's Illustration Friday topic is Celebration so here's a taste of Retro Strawberry Cake. True, it's a little on the gaudy side... it could definitely do with some photoshop magic, (maybe a moire pattern?) as it's currently in all my usual media - pencil, coloured pencil, watercolours, inks and gouache, but heck, it's past midnight here and nearly the end of this week's challenge... enough already!

Illustration Friday - Pretend

This is one of my entries in this week's in-house illo show at Camberwell. It's inspired by the original 'Duck and Cover' campaign. While there was little understanding about radiation poisoning or fallout in the late 1940s, (read more here) regular nuclear testing continued on Moruroa until 1996. This week's Illustration Friday theme is 'Pretend'.
Moruroa. Pretend it never happened.

Illustration Friday - Wise Cookie

'Wise Cookie' is my entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme: Wise
Media: Tea, dye, col. pencils, poster paint, graphite on postcard by Hahnemuhle

'Wise 'Owl' was the first image to pop into my head, but I went with Fortune Cookie wisdom as I'd already picked some up at Chinatown for another project. I wanted to be sure I was buying authentic cookies and not a 'made in UK' version which come with English/German fortunes.... The storekeeper confirmed I was on the right track with excited cries of 'Lucky number! Lucky number!' So, besides providing potentially lucky Lotto numbers, do these cookies contain wisdom? Not according to the Chinese migrants in The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, who conclude the cookies contain not wisdom, but 'bad instruction'. Read more about Fortune Cookies on Wikipedia
