Illustrator Jacques Callot

Next on Wigan's list* is my first look at Jacques Callot, who made 1400 etchings across his life. Goya was influenced by Callot - not a war artist, but a man who depicted everyday scenes, which in his lifetime included France's invasion of the Duchy of Lorraine and the brutal acts of war which ensued. This is 'Les misères de la guerre'. Chilling.

Brueghel

I'm on my way through Wigan's list* and following yesterday's Hieronymous Bosch is painter and printmaker, Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

His keen observations of common life are really interesting, and I plan to learn something from his warm, rich colour palette. My favourite painting is 'Netherlandish Proverbs', a sort of 'What People Do All Day' for the 16th Century.

Hieronymous Bosch

Hieronymous Bosch is next on Wigan's  list of  'key artists and illustrators whose drawings have captured life with penetrating personal vision' in 'Thinking Visually' (AVA, 2006).

'The Garden of Earthly Delights' is the Bosch I'm most familiar with - here's a section from the bottom right panel of the triptych, and a resin figurine which looks strangely contemporary, given the design has been lifted from a 500 year old painting.

Thinking Visually: Arcimboldo

'Thinking Visually' by Mark Wigan, (AVA, 2006) lists 'A canon of key artists and illustrators whose drawings have captured life with penetrating personal vision....' Wigan adds that his list is by no means complete, but is 'a broad range of people well worth further investigation.'

Here is Guiseppe Arcimboldo. Maybe 'Winter' (Louvre) provided inspiration for Treebeard and the tree-like Ents, or Disney's Fantasy Land stories.
